Zakynthos (Zante) town is the capital city of the island and has a rich and colourful history having been captured by many different rulers over the centuries. In 1953 a massive earthquake destroyed many of the original buildings on the island and the town was rebuilt as closely as possible to its original form. Most of the buildings are of Venetian style which dates back many centuries when the island was under Venetian rule.
The Solomos museum is worth a visit named after the Greek poet Dionysos Solomos who wrote the Greek national anthem also the spectacular main church of the island St Dionysos, named after the patron saint of the island has an impressive collection of art and still contains some of the saints' relics.
The town is set along the picturesque harbour and is a wonderful setting to enjoy a coffee or try one of the local tavernas.
