Katastari is the largest village on the island and the most populated, although it retains its traditional feel. The resort of Alykes is almost a part of this expanded village and is 2km from the centre of Katastari. Long ago before medieval times the locals were afraid of the pirates that came along the coast and therefore moved their houses closer and higher up the mountains.
All the lower land of Katastari was left for agricultural use only. From this the name Katastari was founded as Katastari in Greek literally means "lower wheat fields" and the lowest part of Katastari which was Alykes was deserted for many years.
The village has its own pharmacy, police station, schools, supermarkets, bakers, butchers and various other shops and therefore is a popular location for people wanting to buy land or their dream home.
