Maherado village is to the west of Zante Town, the capital of Zakynthos.
It is the second largest village on the island, with a population of 10,000 people. The village is famous for the pretty Church of Agia Mavra, which dates from the 14th Century and is one of the oldest Churches on Zakynthos.
The church has a fine collection of icons, the Venetian belfry is impressive and the bells are rumored to be the most harmonious in the whole of Greece.
The village is set amongst a green landscape, with the wonderful fragrance of pine trees. It is a traditional village that remains untouched by the hand of tourism and as such is a wonderful place to visit to discover the true essence of Zakynthos.
Celebrations in honor of Agia Mavra usually take place the first weekend of July, when the whole town gets together to dance in traditional customs and eat delicious barbequed food.
