The village of Maries is said to be named after two Mary's, Mary of Magdalene and Mary of Klopas. According to tradition their ship dropped anchor at Porto Vromi and Mary Magdalene came ashore to spread Christ's gospel. The footprint can still be seen imprinted on the rock of the shore. Maries is a large green mountainous village with its famous three-aisled church which was built in the fifteenth century and dedicated to Mary Magdalene.
A quiet and relaxing area with magnificent views, this is the prefect place for a romantic night out and to take in the beautiful sunset. Maries is near Porto Vromi from where boat trips run to the shipwreck and blue caves.
