Orthonies is a small picturesque village in the north of the island, where the Monastery of Our Lady Spileotissa (meaning Holy Mother of the cave) is located.
The Monastery dates from the 16th Century and myth states that it was built here and named after an icon of the Madonna that was found in a nearby cave on Mount Vrachionas.
The icon is housed in the monastery. At present the inside of the monastery is not open to the public so the icon cannot be viewed, but it is still attractive from the outside. Surrounding the monastery is lush green vegetation providing a scenic landscape.
